What are all chords in key of g?

The seven chords in the key of G major are G major (I), A minor (ii), B minor (iii), C major (IV), D major (V), E minor (vi), and F# diminished (vii°). Each chord is built from a note of the G major scale, and each one has a job inside the key.

Here is the complete list with notes and Roman numerals:

Most songs in G major lean on G, C, and D, which are the tonic, subdominant, and dominant. Those three chords alone can carry a huge number of folk, rock, and pop tunes.

The G major scale recap

The G major scale is G, A, B, C, D, E, and F#. The key signature has one sharp, F#, which means every F in the music is played sharp unless an accidental says otherwise.

The relative minor of G major is E minor. Both keys share the exact same notes and the same one-sharp signature, so any chord you learn in G major also works in E minor.

Each chord in the key is built by stacking thirds from a scale note. For example, the G chord uses the first, third, and fifth notes of the scale: G, B, and D. The A minor chord uses A, C, and E, and so on down the list.

Easy open chord shapes in G major

Five of the seven chords in G major are open chords that need no barre: G, Am, C, D, and Em. Only Bm requires a barre, and F#dim is rarely used in beginner songs.

Here are the fingerings for each open chord:

• G: middle on the 3rd fret of the 6th string, index on the 2nd fret of the 5th string, ring on the 3rd fret of the 1st string. Strum all six strings.
• Am: index on the 1st fret of the 2nd string, middle on the 2nd fret of the 4th string, ring on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string. Strum strings 1 through 5.
• C: ring on the 3rd fret of the 5th string, middle on the 2nd fret of the 4th string, index on the 1st fret of the 2nd string. Strum strings 1 through 5.
• D: index on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string, ring on the 3rd fret of the 2nd string, middle on the 2nd fret of the 1st string. Strum strings 1 through 4.
• Em: middle on the 2nd fret of the 5th string, ring on the 2nd fret of the 4th string. Strum all six strings. This is the easiest chord on the list.

Because five chords are open shapes, G major is the most comfortable key for acoustic guitar. Many classic guitar songs are written in G for exactly this reason. If you are new to the instrument, start with G, C, D, and Em before attempting the Bm barre.

The Bm barre chord and F#dim

B minor is the only barre chord in the key. The standard shape is an A-shape barre at the 2nd fret, written as X24432. Barre the 2nd fret with your index finger, then form an Am shape above it with your other fingers.

If the full barre feels too hard, substitute Bm7 instead. The Bm7 shape is much lighter and still fits the key. Many players use it in real songs without anyone noticing the difference.

F#dim is the diminished chord of the key, built from F#, A, and C. It appears rarely in beginner material, and when it does, the shape 2X232X works well. You can also skip it entirely and let the D chord do the dominant work.

Common chord progressions in G major

These are the progressions you will meet most often in the key of G:

• I-IV-V: G, C, D. The backbone of folk, rock, and country.
• I-vi-IV-V: G, Em, C, D. The classic 50s progression used in countless pop hits.
• I-V-vi-IV: G, D, Em, C. The modern pop staple.
• ii-V-I: Am7, D7, Gmaj7. The jazz turnaround, and a great way to practice seventh chords.

Practice each progression slowly with a metronome. Once your fingers move smoothly between G, C, and D, add Em, then tackle the Bm barre last.

Seventh chords in the key of G

Adding a seventh to each triad gives you the four-note chords of the key:

• Gmaj7: G, B, D, F#
• Am7: A, C, E, G
• Bm7: B, D, F#, A
• Cmaj7: C, E, G, B
• D7: D, F#, A, C
• Em7: E, G, B, D
• F#m7b5: F#, A, C, E

D7 is the most useful of these because it is the dominant seventh. It pulls strongly back to G and shows up in blues, folk, and rock constantly. Gmaj7 and Am7 are also common in pop and jazz.

How to practice all chords in key of g

Use this routine to lock the key into muscle memory:

1. Play each chord as a slow strum, one chord per bar, in order from G to F#dim.
2. Repeat the sequence backward from F#dim to G.
3. Play the I-IV-V progression until you can switch without looking.
4. Add the I-vi-IV-V progression and keep a steady rhythm.
5. Finish with the ii-V-I using seventh chords.

Ten minutes a day beats one long session a week. Keep your thumb relaxed behind the neck and press only as hard as needed for a clean sound.
